I've finished up 4 more blocks for the quilt. These are #23 Country Farm, #48 Homeward Bound, #56 Maple Leaf, & #90 Storm Signal. While making the last few blocks, I'm trying to add in some darker colors. I noticed most of the blocks are really bright and I thought adding some with darker colors would be good to add in the mix. Only 5 more blocks until I can starting arranging them!
I've been looking through what I have on hand for a sashing fabric and have pulled these 3 fabrics out as options. I spent quite a bit of time looking through the finished quilts thread on the FW flickr group. {All the quilts look so beautiful... you should take a look there if you're needing inspiration to keep working on your own blocks!}
Anyway, I placed some blocks on each of the fabrics to see what they would look like used as sashing.

Option A: Ok, so I really do like all the options. I guess I just have to decide what kind of look I'm going for. To me, the white seems crisp and more modern. It would really show off the bright colors.
Option B: This one is nice, too. The fabric has a really nice texture print to it and I like how it kind of pulls together all the blocks.
Option C: Now, I'm leaning toward using this one. It may be the most traditional choice (only because the example quilt in the book uses a brown sashing, too). I like how the colorful blocks really shine with the darker sashing.
Well, I suppose I have a little bit more time to decide. I should get those last 5 blocks made!
Is there an option that you like best?

My vote is for the second option - it's just so airy and cheery :)
I like the 2nd option as well...
I am partial to the third print, but probably because I'm pretty sure is a Denyse Schmidt fabric. You can never go wrong with that! I do like that it looks traditional, as well.
I'd also vote for the third option. I love how traditional and homey it makes your blocks feel. Just reads "cozy" to me.
I tend to use a lot of white bc it's a nice contrast. But in this case I think you're right, that the brown really lets the blocks shine and stand on their own. Good luck choosing! Either way, it'll be beautiful like everything you make :)
i like the 2nd option. followed by the 3rd :D
I like them all, but my gut reaction goes with #2. Good luck choosing! :)
I love how the 3rd makes the blocks pop, that would be my pick :)
I'm a fan of the second one. I love the white but it is so expected that I think I would go with 2 or 3. And 3 is nice but well I like 2 because it's different, modern, and nice and airy.
I like the 2nd option as well. The white and the brown are for me to dominant to the pretty blocks.
I see what you're saying about option 3 as the blocks do jump out at you....you could always use the brown and then for the outside border use a cream/white like http://www.flickr.com/photos/55642760@N07/6802228808/here:
I always love white as it's more modern but if it's going to be used by the family and snuggled under lots, I'd go with the brown:)
You always make all your quilts fantastic so any choice you make will be beautiful:)
Your blocks are so cute! All the options are great, but I LOVE option B! I am slightly obsessed with cross-hatch looking fabrics at the moment, hehe :)
Hi Jessica,
I think the white makes (option A) it look more 'modern' and the dark one makes it look more traditional. I don't think B does much for it. Did you try a dark navy-ish blue-like the blue in the red and blue block in the option C picture? I am SURE whatever you pick will look great--I have never seen anything that you have made that didn't look fantastic!
Blessings,
Carin from Margaret's Hope Chest
Option B all the way. I like how the white looks, but I rarely choose a white background because I have dogs and white shows dirt so much. :) I really love how it looks with the crosshatch fabric.
Yes! I totally agree that your third option is the most effective! Looks great!!!
the third one is amazing!
I would choose the third option. with all the white and grey from now adays, the brown seems timeless. I'm sure when we look back in a couple of years we think 'how did I thought grey was a great color???':-) although I do like all the grey....
I vote #3!!
Normally I would go for white but in this case I'm loving the 3rd option. It looks traditional but makes the colorful blocks really shine!
I like white with different colored posts, but I am a white background kinda girl. Looks great!
I like the 3rd option best! Then my choice is white. I am not fond of #2. Had I not seen 1 and 3, I'm sure I would have loved 2!
I like the 2nd one best.
Definitely #3! #2's ok too. I think the white actually is too much brightness. I think it would be overwhelming all together, and you couldn't appreciate the detail of all the different blocks. The dull brown is the right contrast and gives the eye a place to rest amid all those bright blocks. I even think the quiet print is better than a solid here, as a solid would read as a bold contrast vs. all the pattern of the blocks.
I vote for #2 as well.
these are so great. i really love option B. it is so pretty. what is that fabric?
The dark fabric in the third option speaks to me.
In my humble opinion the brown really helps the colors sing!
I love option C ...the first one for me is too predictable...the second one would work ok too..but the third really let's the blocks be the star of the show :-)

I would usually go for white but option C really makes everything stand out.
I think the second is my favorite! The brown would be so pretty too, though!
I enjoyed skimming the comments. I think I would prefer a color as the sashing but no matter what you choose, your blocks look fabulous.
I love your blocks! I have been considering starting a Farmer's Wife. I like the second option. I also like the white.
#3 is my pick.
I like the second option! It's the one that jumped out to me in the first pic of all the options together! Any decision you'll make will be great though!
Ack! I like them all, too! If you twist my arm, I'd choose option #2, though! Woohoo! You're nearly finished! By the way, your newest blocks are lovely!
Dark brown!
I vote for the FMF print! :)
Either the first or third. I'm leaning toward the third. Wow--you are almost done!! I think Carla and I still have twenty more blocks. But we have each contacted our quilter so we have to stay accountable and get that quilt top together! Your blocks are beautiful!
Generally, I always pick white or a light BUT I'm loving the 3rd option! The blocks seem to "sing" against the dark background. Either way, it's going to be gorgeous.
I love the white so much I am shocked everyone else didn't say the same thing! :) It really showcases your blocks. The browsn is much too traditional for my taste and #2 is - eh.
I think either the 2nd or 3rd choice are great, my first instinct was #3.
I am having such a hard time picking sashing. I have so many colors and it looks silly with anything that I have chosen so far. Yours looks perfect with the brown and it does make it pop. Thank you- I think I will take a handfull of my blocks to the quilt store.
Go A...
That would be my choice :)
I like number 1, but I think they all would look great.
Sounds like you've already decided, but for my two cents worth, I always like the lighter ones.
Dang. You just reminded me that I need to get back to my farmer's wife blocks. If I can remember where they are...
